Note 776 Apartment Life 012 Still Unpacking And Decluttering

I just realized today on Sunday, March 10th, 2024, that I haven’t made an update about my move to the new apartment since January.

So what is new? I have bought so much since I started moving into the apartment in November 2023. I still have a lot of things I need to get, but my spending on apartment necessities is slowing down some. Spending is turning more into buying things for decorating the apartment, more than buying practical things needed for basic living. I’ve been buying a lot of artificial plants, and I will continue buying more for awhile. I hope to have the majority of my home decor spending done by the end of June this year.

I’ve been stocking up on more storage containers again. This time around, I’m getting smaller containers that can be used to organize my belongings into easier to handle containers, rather than keeping things in big containers. The reason for this is because it is just easier to see what you have in smaller containers than it is the bigger ones when you have a lot of things stored in them. The smaller containers are also easier to move around the apartment when I want to dig through them for decluttering. So I have all of the large containers I bought when I moved, plus a bunch of small containers I recently bought, and tomorrow I’m going to buy some medium containers I had my eyes on last week. That may or may not take care of all of container needs. If not, I think one more shopping trip for containers next week will probably do it for me. My goal is transfer all of my possessions into new containers, and get rid of all the old storage containers that don’t match. I know that sounds like a waste somewhat, but it is a part of my decluttering goal. Having all of the new containers only would mean that all of my containers match in size, and so would be easier to organize on my utility shelves.

So I still have a lot of work to do with organizing things in my apartment, but I’m getting to near the end of most of the work I need to do and then I can start actually living in a home again. I can already tell that I’m getting there because I’ve gotten back into some crafting and shopping for more used books… which is a story for another post to come.

Note 124 My Mission To Fully Organize My Email Part 004

I’m gearing up to start working on organizing a 2nd email address in Gmail that I’ve had since 2010. I also downloaded, and have started using Mozilla Thunderbird email client. I will add my Gmail accounts to this client as I finish organizing them. I have a new goal to get every single email account I have organized, and maybe even figure out which ones I can stop using altogether. It is going to take me some time to get used to that method of working with my email as I have not used an email client in many years. So far I like it, and I hope that I will be able to get all of my Gmail accounts logged into it so that I can actually start managing them, instead of leaving them to lay dormant for years on end.

Note 123 My Mission To Fully Organize My Email Part 003

I did it! I finally got all emails in my main Gmail account that I’ve had since 2014 organized and cleaned out. If you’re curious how I figured out a quick way to do it, I just started searching my emails by email addresses. This would give me lists of similar emails and then I moved those into appropriate label folders. I also deleted a ton of old promotional emails and social emails. I’ve still got some things to get rid of, but at least everything is now tucked away in a folder where I can work on getting rid of things a little at a time in sections. Going forward, I will work on moving any new emails into the folders I set up so that I can keep my inbox empty. Now that I’ve figured out how to do this job quickly, I can work on organizing some of my other Gmail accounts that I’ve also had for years. It really feels great to have this accomplished. I’ve wanted to get it done for a long time. Yay me!

Note 122 My Mission To Fully Organize My Email Part 002

I am feeling sad tonight lol… I just realized that (well I already knew it) Gmail not only has a Primary inbox, but also has a Promotions tab and a Social tab for email. I’ve just added up all of my emails in these tabs, and I currently as of this post have 12,761 emails to sort into their appropriate folders. Well folks this is what happens when you allow your email to go unsorted for for years. I guess I’m gonna be busy for quite awhile if I ever want to get my emails in order.

Note 120 My Mission To Fully Organize My Email Part 001

If you are curious why I haven’t been posting much over the last couple of days, it’s because I have started working on organizing my primary email. It is a email account that I’ve had for years that has essentially gone unorganized and is piled up with hundreds of unread emails. How I have survived and stayed current with events in my life using this particular email account is baffling to me while I’ve been working on this project.

I am finding things that I had long forgotten about. But I have learned my lessons. The first lesson I’ve learned is that I needed to be taking my email more seriously since so much of my life is tied to it. The second lesson I’ve learned is that it really isn’t difficult to manage an email account. I use Gmail, and it allows sorting by labels, and you can move your emails into those labels so that your inbox doesn’t have to stay full all the time.

I guess I just admitted that I suck at email management over the last few years, but I’m working on getting that issue fixed, and I consider myself lucky that Gmail does a great job of not losing any emails, at least as far as I can tell. I’m probably not going to be doing a lot of blogging, other than the daily questions prompts, so that I can at least have one post going up daily on Pad53 which is one of my main goals for this site, until I have my email under control.

As of this post I have 1,400+ emails left to finish. This is down from nearly 4K a day or two ago.

Note 096 Sort Your Email By Sender Before Cleaning Your Inbox

There are a lot of methods to try in the never-ending quest for a way to sort through and slim down our bulging inboxes. But they all have one thing in common: They rely on the chronology of when each email came in. Let’s try turning that approach on its head, and instead, sort by sender to weed through the mess.
